Wanli mark and period (1573-1620)
The dish with rounded sides is painted to the interior with a central medallion enclosing four lotus heads amidst scrolling foliage. The exterior is similarly decorated with a continuous floral scroll containing six further lotus heads. The base is inscribed with a six-character reign mark.

This well-potted dish is of the conventional imperial type with traditional scrolling-lotus motif that can be found throughout the Ming dynasty. The intertwining lotus scrolls represent the cycle of life and the unceasing vitality of life. In Buddhism, the lotus flower is a symbol of purity and is one of the Eight Emblems.
A very similar dish is in the Metropolitan Museum, and another one was sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong.
