A brown-glazed Dingyao bowl stand


Northern Song dynasty (960-1127) The bowl stand is modelled after a lacquer prototype with a cup-shaped receptacle resting on a high-footed saucer. The whole is covered with a rich russet-brown glaze with dark areas resembling ‘hare’s fur’ and falls irregularly short of the foot. The interior of the hollow foot is left unglazed. 11.6 cm diameter   Provenance: Formerly in a Japanese private collection     Two comparable bowl stands are illustrated in Robert Mowry, Hare’s Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers, 1996, pls. 12-13. Another russet-glazed Ding-ware bowl stand and tea bowl is illustrated in Rose Kerr, Song Dynasty Ceramics, pl. 40.
