A small Sancai-glazed dish


Jin-Yuan dynasty, 13th century The interior of the dish is carved and decorated in white, yellow and brown with a hare depicted with its head turned back, amidst grasses below a moon, all against a green-glazed ground over white slip. The green glaze reaches just over the mouth rim on the reverse. The base unglazed. 12.6 cm diameter     Provenance: Formerly in a Dutch private collection     A very similar dated dish in the National Museum, Tokyo, bearing the inscription on the back: ‘Made in the 6th year (1269) of the Jin-Yuan period’, is illustrated in Mary Tregear, Song Ceramics, New York, 1982, pl. 83. Another very similar example from the Tsuneichi Inoue Collection was sold at Sotheby’s London, 13 May 2015, lot no. 42.
