A green-glazed pottery figural candle holder


Eastern Han dynasty (AD 25-220) The candle holder is modelled as a corpulent figure kneeling and holding a child with both arms flung out. The head is supporting a tall cylindrical vessel. The face of the larger figure has foreign features with a large nose, grinning mouth, high arched eyebrows and deep-set eyes. The green glaze has extensive areas of iridescence. 27.5 cm high   Provenance: A Dutch private collection   A very similar figure in the British Museum, London, is illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, The World’s Greatest Collections, vol. 5, pl. 63. Another is illustrated and discussed by Annette L. Juliano in Bronze, Clay and Stone, Chinese Art in the C.C. Wang Collection, Hong Kong, 1988, pl. 21.
