A Northern black ware bowl

Song or Jin dynasty, probably 11th century   The bowl is of conical form with slightly flaring rim, supported on a neatly cut foot. The interior and exterior are applied with a rich dark brown glaze thinning at the rim to a dark caramel tone. The glaze is stopping unevenly around the foot revealing the light greyish stoneware.  12.2 cm diameter   Provenance: A Dutch private collection   A bowl and stand covered with a similar glaze are illustrated in Robert Mowry, Hare’s Fur, Tortoiseshell and Partridge Feathers, Chinese Brown and Black Glazed Ceramics, 400-1400, Harvard University Art Museum, 1996, no. 29.
